Today, we’re speaking with Lookers Volvo Colchester’s Franchise Manager, Miles Alvis, based in Colchester.

Could you describe your company’s activity on social networks?
We are quite active with twitter and LinkedIn, we know we have a much bigger audience opportunity via social media though, Kronika is our digital magazine and it has found an audience that is not historically from our database, we are reaching far more people this way.

Are there elements of your business now that would not have been possible without social media?
Yes, the speed in which we can get a positive message into the market place would not have been possible 8-10 years ago, I think we interact with an audience today that is knowledgeable about our product and business, we have to deliver meaningful information that is superior to historical media channels.

How has your relationship with your customers/clients changed with the dawn of social media?
It’s instant now, I can respond to an enquiry or follow up a customer query within seconds, customers like the reassurance that we are able to converse with them outside of normal business hours, I’m not saying we are open 24/7 yet but we are heading that way, you can live chat with one of our trained representatives any time of the day, we respond instantly to any sales, service or parts enquiry through this channel now.

Which social media campaigns or accounts have really caught your eye recently?
I really like viral advertising via the internet, I think brands can express themselves and appeal to a wider audience, YouTube is great for demonstrating what cars are capable of, people love to see a smoking tyre or a car on the limit, you can’t do that on TV anymore.

What have you found to be the most positive and negative aspects of using social media for your business?
We are open for business all of the and we are open for business all of the time!

What advice would you give to businesses looking to improve their social media activity?
Put yourself out there, be brave, embrace it, if you’re not confident then find yourself a partner that is, our friends at GoldSand Digital live and breathe social media, they produce and edit Kronika and make it visible to audiences I could never reach, ignore it and your business will be left behind.
